For detailed information about the different modules of the study program please consult the Catalogue of Modules (be aware that there might be some differences between the module handbook and schedule). Please choose your courses so you will get the minimum of 10 ECTS/Module.
Schedule changes cannot be excluded until the beginning of the semester. The exact classes offered by Bejing University and the ECCS will be discussed in consultation with Dr. Jost as soon as possible.
Course Offering for Module 7 – Contexts of Decision-Making in China (10 ECTS)
Students are free to choose either the courses of Dr. Drettas, Chinese language courses or a combination of both. In case of solely choosing Chinese language courses, the language courses have to supplement for a total of 10 ECTS. In case of combining courses with one seminar, only 5 ECTS in language courses are needed.
ECTS: 5 ECTS
Synopsis: This seminar aims to identify and analyze the modalities of both implicit and explicit decision-making processes in contemporary China, with a strong focus on the political, economic and social fields.
Materials from the Chinese media (translated into, or originally published in, English) and academic studies will serve as the basis to discuss and uncover how decisions are made, explained, understood and implemented in the special context of today’s China. Aside from political and social science, as well as economics, disciplines such as history and cultural studies will occasionally be applied in the attempt to define what constitutes a “good decision” in the concrete cases that will be collectively examined.

Synopsis: This seminar invites students to reflect on their experience living in China and to place it in the perspective of their training in decision-making studies.
Each student will present concrete examples taken from their everyday life in Beijing and discuss them with the class under the teaching staff’s supervision. Students will be thus given the opportunity to articulate what they retain from their immersion into contemporary Chinese society and to exchange their views and impressions in a format that prepares them to fruitful academic discussions.

Synopsis: The ECCS will offer several classes in Modern Chinese Language Training. The students are free to choose the classes additionally to the seminars or earn a part of (5 ECTS) or all ECTS (10 ECTS) of Module 7 in Modern Chinese Language Training instead.
No environment suits the purpose of learning Chinese as a foreign language better than China. Teaching is carried out by experienced language instructors which teach their classes almost entirely in Chinese and encourage students to speak, read and write actively from the earliest stages of their study process.
Course Offering for Module 8 – Specific Approaches of Selected Academic Disciplines (10 ECTS)

Synopsis: The students will choose different classes of their interest at Beijing University in consultation with Dr. Jost.
As one of Chinas leading Universities, Peking University is home to a great variety of study subjects and research fields. This reflects in the teaching provided by the respective institutions on campus. Though most classes at other institutes are not accessible for exchange students, for every term the ECCS will prepare a list of classes from different subjects mainly in English and mainly from the fields of humanities and social sciences, in which students can participate.

Course Offering for Module 9 – Developing Transcultural Sensitivities (10 ECTS)
ECTS: 4 ECTS
Synopsis: The system of civil examinations in late imperial China was a complex and elaborate phenomenon, which served a multitude of purposes. It not only provided a useful tool for the respective dynasties to select their civil servants according to categories of intellectual capability, but also allowed millions of common people to dream a dream of social advancement, defined a common basis of canonized knowledge and values for the entire country across regional, social and even ethnic boundaries and after all still guaranteed the dominance of that class which is usually deemed as “gentry” in China. This seminar aims at a thorough understanding of this system and the influence it had on career decisions of individuals as well as on the “human resource management” of the respective dynasties

Synopsis: The Yenching Academy is a very prestigious institution inside of Peking University, which works with the aim to educate ‘prospective leader’ from all parts of the world in matters relevant for China competence in the widest sense. The ECCS cooperates with this and other institutions inside of Peking University to provide additional opportunities to learn about different aspects of China, its History and culture.
