Admission Requirements

The SDAC program is an interdisciplinary qualitative social sciences program with a strong focus on social and cultural anthropology and the study of East Asia and Southeast Asia. Different Bachelor degrees can be accepted. Those who completed previous degrees in a subject that focuses on social sciences, social and cultural anthropology, ethnology, and Asian languages and area studies are particularly welcome to apply.

We consider individual applications from applicants with relevant degrees and interests as long as their final grade is not beyond 2.50 in German Grading System.

You are required to have at least a B2 Level on the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to apply. If you wish to know more about TOEFL or IELTS scores and their equivalent levels, please visit “Compare TOEFL Scores” as well as “Cambridge English Qualification“. For further information on the comparability of internationally recognized language tests to be accepted as proof of English language proficiency to study at FAU, please read this page.

No proof of English language skills is required for applicants who have completed their previous academic degrees in English as well as those who are from countries/regions where English is the official language and are considered to be native speakers of English.

However, as the quality of English varies quite a lot internationally, applicants who are not native speakers of English are recommended to submit international language certificates. Additionally, applicants who obtained their academic degrees in English more than three years before applying to SDAC are also encouraged to submit certificates.

You are required to have at least A1 Level by the end of the 2nd  semester of the Master’s Program.

The SDAC program is intensive, and students should have finalized their BA before entering into it. In exceptional cases, some students can be conditionally allowed to enter the program if they have submitted all the requested works for the completion of their BA but do not have yet received officially all their grades. These cases are examined individually and only permitted in exceptional circumstances.
