Guest Lecture by Fengshi Wu: “Environmental Activism in China: Revisiting the Thesis of ‘In the Name of the Public'”

On Monday, November 18th 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Dr. Maria Bondes’ “Contentious Politics” seminar will host Fengshi Wu.

Fengshi Wu is an Associate Professor in Political Science and International Relations at the School of Social Sciences, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia. She is a world leading scholar in environmental politics, state-society relations, and global governance with an empirical focus on the Asia Pacific region (esp. East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia). Her recent research and teaching interests highlights the global transformation of the energy system rapidly accelerated by the challenges and geo-politics of climate change.

Based on her influential 2015 paper “In the Name of the Public: Environmental Protest and the Changing Landscape of Popular Contention in China,” co-authored with Christoph Steinhardt from the University of Vienna, she will discuss the main features of environmental activism in today’s China and reflect what has changed in recent years under the Xi Jinping administration. SDAC students are invited to read the original article in preparation for the talk. It will be sent to the students via email by the coordinator.
